So You Want to Be an Educational Psychologist?: A Personal Journey in the Special Education (SPED) Sector

Working as an Educational Psychologist in the SPED sector is a very rewarding career path. Educational Psychologists work closely with children with developmental disabilities from 7 to 21 years of age where the job often entails the assessment and identification of the individual needs of children and the development of appropriate intervention programmes. These includes cognition, adaptive behaviours, social skills training and work skills aptitude assessments. In addition, support through consultation to parents, caregivers, teachers and other school personnel are often provided to enhance the learning and adjustment of the children.
But the question here is: how do you get to be an Educational Psychologist in the first place? Job opportunities in the field of psychology are becoming increasingly competitive and jobs as educational psychologists are no exception. The session aims to help you understand what it takes and what you’re getting into. Forensic Psychology is a field that deals with both psychology and the law. Forensic psychologists can perform many roles and it is definitely not “CSI” (Crime Scene Investigation). Forensic psychologists are involved in different contexts of law, e.g. criminal (offenders with mental conditions), civil (psychological injury) and family (custody of children of divorce family, parental fitness). Boarder application also includes offender profiling, police or criminal justice personnel selection, terrorism, sex offending, violence and risk assessment, offender assessment, treatment and rehabilitation, expert testimony.

Dr Ruth Manasseh, a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist who has been in practice for more than 20 years, presents her pioneering research which explores the effects of using film extracts as a supplement to analytic work with traumatised patients who remain in an impasse, despite their having undergone previous pharmaceutical, cognitive or psychodynamic interventions. She originally trained and worked as a film maker and the main innovation, which she calls Applied Cinematherapy©, is the controlled way in which film extracts are introduced into a traditional psychotherapy setting governed by established psychoanalytic psychotherapy practices.
