SPEAKERS' PROFILES

A forensic psychologist by training, Majeed Khader is the Director of the Home Team Behavioural Sciences Centre under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Singapore. Dr Majeed is also the Chief Psychologist of the Singapore Police Force. A trained hostage negotiator, his previous operational duties include being the ex-Deputy Commander of the Crisis Negotiation Unit and a trainer with the negotiation unit. He teaches criminal psychology part time as an Assistant Professor (Adjunct) at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Nanyang Technology University.

​

For the past 23 years, Dr Majeed has overseen the development of psychological services in the areas of stress, resilience, employee selection, deception psychology, leadership, crisis negotiations, crime profiling, and crisis psychology. For his work, he was awarded the National Day Public Administration Award (Bronze) in 2006 by the President of Singapore and once again the Public Administration Award Silver in 2014.

Vyda is a Clinical Psychologist, Director, and a founding partner at Think Kids. Vyda is also one of the founding partners of Think Psychological Services, a leading private psychological practice for children and adults in Singapore. (

Vyda advocates the importance of early diagnosis and intervention for autism. She has trained and worked closely with families, schools and the community in the treatment and intervention for autism and related disorders. Vyda has more than 16 years of experience and specialisation in diagnosis, psychological assessment and treatment of children with developmental disorders.

​

During her time in Singapore, Vyda has supervised and trained many therapists, parents and health professionals in the application of ABA techniques to help families cope and manage the challenging behaviours of their children. Vyda volunteers in several outreach and awareness programs in the field of mental health. She regularly attends international conferences to keep abreast with the latest evidence-based treatment methods. She believes that special needs require special, individualised attention and care. She is frequently featured and quoted in various Singapore media regarding a wide range of psychological matters for adults and children.

Vaani Gunaseelan holds a Doctorate in Psychology (Clinical) and is trained in the Triple P Positive Parenting Program. She is a registered psychologist with AHPRA – Psychology Board of Australia and the Singapore Register of Psychologists, and a full member of the Singapore Psychological Society.

 

Vaani has experience working with children and youth within community and private mental health settings in Australia and Singapore, where she provided psychological assessment and psychotherapy to children and young people who experienced moderate to severe emotional and behavioural disorders, including depression, anxiety, self-harming behaviour, trauma and abuse, and problems in family relationships. She is qualified to conduct cognitive and psychological assessments to determine the presence of developmental disorders and learning difficulties, and provides personalised strategies to assist with any identified difficulties.

 

Vaani works closely with parents, teachers and other health professionals to provide individualised assistance to promote each child’s personal growth. She has also been featured in parent guidance magazines.

Ryan serves in the capacity of corporate communications and outreach with the Samaritans of Singapore (SOS). He graduated with a B.Soc.Sci. (Hon) in Psychology from NUS. With an understanding in the science of human behaviour, his passion for the social science sector led him to embark on a journey to spread awareness of an area in mental health often overlooked - suicide.

​

His work at SOS focuses on educating the public about suicide-related issues and encouraging health-seeking behaviours. With a firm belief that social support plays an essential role in an individual's mental health, his experience at SOS reiterates how an unattended crisis may lead to suicide ideation.

Loo Seng NEO is a Principal Behavioural Sciences Research Analyst with the Home Team Behavioural Sciences Centre at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Singapore. For the past 12 years, Loo Seng has been specialising in the area of violent extremism, particularly in the fields of online radicalisation, online threat assessment, pre-attack warning signs, and psychology of violent extremism. He works with a team of research analysts undertaking behavioural sciences research on violent extremism, resilience and intergroup conflict.

​

He has presented at many international conferences, trained law enforcement officers, and published many government research reports and peer-reviewed journals and book chapters on the topic of violent extremism. He has also co-edited a book titled ‘Combating Violent Extremism and Radicalisation in the Digital Era’ in 2016, a four-volume compendium titled ‘A Behavioural Sciences Approach to Understanding Terrorism’ in 2017, and is currently editing a book titled ‘Learning from Violent Extremist Attacks: Behavioural Sciences Insights for Practitioners and Policymakers’. Loo Seng is currently pursuing his PhD in psychology researching on the personality profile of violent extremists at Nanyang Technological University.

Dr Jessie Chua is a Senior Clinical Psychologist with Resilienz Clinic. She received her Doctorate of Psychology in Clinical Psychology from USA.

​

Kindness, compassion, and authenticity guides the way Jessie approaches the people around her and her clinical work. In the therapy room, Jessie focuses on learning your life stories in order to have a deeper understanding of your worldviews. Using a combination of Psychodynamic theories, Cognitive Behavioral techniques, and Mindfulness-based practices, Jessie works at your pace towards personal development and/or symptom reduction.

Jessie is a Licensed Psychologist in the state of California, USA and is a full member with the Singapore Psychological Society. Having trained and worked extensively in the U.S, Jessie's clinical experience were derived from working in schools, outpatient clinics, assisted living facilities, and psychiatric hospitals. Jessie has experience working with individuals and families from varying backgrounds across the lifespan. Given her personal experience, Jessie is also particularly interested in issues related to Expatriation and Re-Expatriation.

​Mr Conrad Mark Lim is a Psychotherapist with Resilienz Clinic. He received his postgraduate Master of Social Science (Professional Counselling), and Graduate Diploma of Social Science (Professional Counselling) from the Swinburne University of Technology, Australia.


Prior experience from counselling in nursing homes, a local secondary school, and with young adults have facilitated his exposure to therapeutic work with people of all ages and walks of life. During this time, he had worked with cases of anxiety, depression, grief, self-esteem issues, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention-deficit hyperactive disorder, and behavioural issues that suggest delinquency.


Mr Conrad is passionate about the human ability to overcome myriad forms of adversity and the means to unlocking this potential. Having the privilege of working with each client, empathizing with their hardships, and working through their issues, had allowed him a deep appreciation towards the importance of psychological adaption, mental grit and resilience that remains untapped within. Knowing as such, he approaches each individual beyond personal and societal prejudices and bias; offering unconditional positive regard and meeting them where they are at psychologically, and gradually working towards therapeutic success.

Haikal is a clinical psychologist and founder of ImPossible Psychological Services. He specialises in interventions for adult mental health issues and couple therapy. He obtained a Master of Psychology (Clinical) from the National University of Singapore (NUS) under a full scholarship by the National Council of Singapore (NCSS).

​

Prior to starting his private practice, Haikal spent several years gaining clinical experience in the social service setting. Haikal is trained in and uses varying approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Choice Theory, Reality Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Schema Therapy. Apart from his role as a clinician, Haikal also lectures at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), and conducts talks and workshops to corporate organisations to raise public awareness on mental health issues.

Laurence Vandenborre is the Founder and Managing Director of "The Red Pencil", an International Art Therapy Humanitarian Foundation whose mission is to bring the benefits of arts therapy to children, adults and families on their pathway to well-being, with a particular attention to those facing overwhelming situations for which they have no words, yet whose sufferings need attention, expression, relief, release and ultimately healing. These situations include long-term hospitalisations, natural disasters and conflict zones. The Red Pencil (Singapore) is a registered charity in Singapore, governed by the Ministry of Social and Family Development, as well as an Institute of Public Character.

Laurence is a Registered Arts Therapist, with a background of professional Counselling and Life Coaching, and who has first been practicing art therapy at Raffles Hospital for a few years before opening her own private practice "The Art Therapy Studio". For years, her interest has included working with adults and family dynamics in a multicultural context, dealing with self-esteem and self-confidence, relationship issues, stress and emotional traumas, addictions, depression, bereavement and parenting issues.

For more than twenty-four years, Tim served as a military officer in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) where he held diverse appointments in the Fleet, in Naval Engineering and Logistics and in Naval Training. In his last appointment, he served as the Head of MINDEF Centre for Management Development. In that role, he was also responsible for Career Transition support for retiring officers.

​

After his early voluntary retirement in 2007, Tim held many different roles in various industries including finance, engineering, manufacturing, communication technology, training, education, healthcare and consulting. He has been a Director of Learning and Development in an Investment Company, APAC HR Director for an American MNC, a Leadership and OD Consultant, Regional Executive Coach, Co-founder and COO of a learning technology startup and Group CEO of a regional retail business. 

​

In his last job before joining the Social Service Sector, Tim worked with country and division CEOs and CFOs in a large European MNC on topics relating to Succession Planning, Talent Pipeline & High Potential Leadership Development. 

​

Tim joined Caregivers Alliance Limited in April 2018. He finds it very fulfilling to work with like-minded colleagues who are passionate about helping caregivers and is encouraged that CAL has a growing network of committed volunteers who are giving back to society by supporting CAL's vision to reach all caregivers of PHMIs (Persons with Mental Health Issues) in Singapore and to empower them to achieve a high level of well-being and resilience.

Edgar K. Tham is Singapore's pioneer sport & performance psychologist; he was employed by the Singapore government as its very first sport psychologist in 1995. As the travelling team psychologist to numerous national team athletes competing at the SEA Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games and others, he has personally coached Olympic and World Championship level athletes to achieve greatness.

After leaving the government-service, he started a private practice in 2006, and continued to share his high-performance psychology expertise with other peak performers from other domains outside of sport, including business, sales, online trading, military, health care, performing arts, education, etc. 

He is currently an associate teaching faculty member in psychology and sports/PE at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS). Edgar is the co-author of Mental Toughness Strategies of the World's Greatest Athletes and In the Zone: The Mindset for Peak Performance in Sport. He uses the lessons learned from champion elite sport as a metaphor for teaching the principles of peak performance under pressure and stress.

Eulisia is currently working as a Psychologist in Metta School, a special education (SPED) school in Singapore. Eulisia’s work as a Psychologist entails the provision of assessments, behavior management support and execution of intervention to children with developmental needs. Eulisia won several awards (Best Research, Best Writing and Best Oral Presentation) in the recent 2017 Singapore Psychological Society Student Research Awards. She has actively participated and presented her research in key conferences in Japan, USA and Greece, in 2018.

Julia is a Consultant Forensic Psychologist at Forensic Psych Services, a company she founded in May 2015. She specialises in forensic psychological assessment and provides reports on medico-legal issues relating to criminal, civil and family law for Court purposes.

A scientist-practitioner, she has worked in universities, hospitals, prisons and correction services, gambling treatment facilities and private clinics. She has been a pioneer in forensic-clinical work in the private sector of Singapore since 2009. She has expertise in assessment of post-traumatic stress disorder, atypical theft offending, impulse-control disorders, problem gambling, drugs and alcohol addictions, and their respective offending. She has written more than 400 forensic reports for Court purposes in the past 9 years and has testified in Singapore courts.

Cheryl is a psychologist with more than 16 years of experience in clinical and community settings in the area of early intervention among young families and children. She has worked fervently in multidisciplinary teams to enhance infant and maternal mental health, as well as functional outcomes of children with special needs. Cheryl has expertise in the assessment of children, and in the design and evaluation of family-centred support programs.

​

Cheryl was a therapist for children with severe autism in London, UK for 2 years before joining KKH Department of Child Development. Currently she works as a Senior Advisor in the Centre of Evidence and Implementation (CEI), working with her team to evaluate programs that empower vulnerable young children and their families. In addition, she practices twice a week at TLC Speech and Language Clinic.

Noraini graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Sydney with a double major in Psychology and Sociology. Since graduating, she has worked with hundreds of parents and young children as part of her position as Research Coordinator at the Neurodevelopment Research Centre. She was involved in two longitudinal studies in Singapore - GUSTO and SPRESTO. In her role with GUSTO and SPRESTO, Noraini was responsible for interviewing parents and running tests on children.

​

She is currently a Research Assistant with the Centre of Evidence and Implementation, where she assesses children and conducts interviews with parents as part of the KidSTART evaluation team.

Maria is a highly qualified, trained Counsellor and Psychotherapist with a background in a variety of therapeutic interventions including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Choice Theory Reality Therapy (CTRT), Mindfulness and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy. Maria specialises in using a combination of therapies and interventions to help her clients achieve personal and professional growth along with desired behavioural change.

Having lived and studied in Europe and worked in the US and Asia extensively, Maria possesses a unique multicultural approach and sensitivity to counselling clients from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities. Her experience working with clients in clinical, corporate and school settings enable her to provide valuable insights when developing holistic treatment plans with clients. Maria specialises in counselling individuals with mood disorders including anxiety and depression, stress management, relationship issues as well as life transitions. Maria believes in using a collaborative approach with clients to aid them in developing self-efficacy, resiliency and self-empowerment through their innate strengths and capabilities.

Jessamine Ihrcke Dorsey ("Jessie") is the Managing Director and Founder of THERIS (Therapeutic & Educational Riding in Singapore). She has a long and extensive background in equine-assisted therapy having previously worked as the Operations Manager at the Riding for the Disabled Association Hong Kong and as an Instructor at the Riding for the Disabled Association Singapore. She was also the Head Equine-Assisted Therapist and a Riding Instructor for the Equestrian Federation of Singapore (EFS) based at the National Equestrian Centre (NEC). Her role with the EFS included the development and delivery of the EQUAL ARK Program - Equine-Assisted Therapy For At-Risk Kids, a landmark program funded by Temasek Holdings.

​

Jessie has a degree in Psychology and Counselling from the University of Surrey Roehamption (UK) and a diploma in Equine-Assisted Therapy (IGOGO, Germany). She is fluent in English and German, and has a good knowledge of Cantonese.

Shirley holds a Master of Social Science in Professional Counselling, and a Certificate in Family Therapy. She is a qualified facilitator of Torn Asunder, an affair recovery programme. Shirley also facilitates at the Singapore Prison Services and the Drug Rehabilitation Center, helping the men and women there to adopt a healthy thinking pattern. Shirley also offers her counselling services at the SIM International Academy and to new students from the Executive Counselling Training Academy (ECTA). She is a registered instructor with the Ministry of Education.


Shirley’s experiences include helping youth at risk in schools, married couples with married life issues, parent and child relationship, people who have been incarcerated and individuals who struggle to live a healthy emotional life. She adopts the eclectic approach when helping her clients. Instead of emphasizing strict adherence to one particular therapy or school of thought, she makes use of elements from a range of therapeutic techniques, with the goal of establishing a course that is personally tailored to her client. She believes that each person that comes to her is a unique individual.


She runs her own private practice at The Blue Pencil.

Dr Denise Dillon is the Associate Dean of Research and Research Education at the JCU Singapore campus. After serving as Head of Academic Group for psychology, arts and education for almost 10 years, Denise now facilitates and promotes the strategic direction of research within JCUS, improvements in the quality and impact of that research, and the growth of local, national and international research collaborations.

She comes from a Human Resources Management and Training background, with strong international experience in NGOs, Education, Retail, Government and Corporate workplaces. Tara's passion is helping people to realise their full potential, both personally and professionally. She is currently pursuing a Master's in Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) as she constantly believes in growing and excelling.

Besides being highly engaged in the education of Positive Psychology and study of resilience, Tara is skilled in the areas of training, having conducted workshops on resilience building and emotional intelligence for corporate companies and schools.

Dr Ruth trained as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist at The Lincoln Centre (London), where she won the Kelnar Prize for her Infant Observation Paper 'Ben'. Dr Ruth has a Clinical Doctorate (PhD) in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy from the University of Essex. She is registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council. 

​

Dr Ruth also has a BFA in Film and Television and originally worked a film maker. She pursued her life-long interest in psychology and mental health when she started her family and has been a practicing Psychoanalytic Therapist for more than 20 years.

​

Dr Ruth has spent most of her career exploring the treatment of, and working with severe psychological trauma cases both in her private practice and in the national health services. For her clinical doctorate, she developed her theories about how to accelerate recovery and pioneered the concept of Applied Cinematherapy (AC) - the introduction of selected film clips into a controlled and regulated analytic setting. The idea of introducing film clips as a potential catalyst evolved from her experience of film-making. The subsequent formation of AC draws on her extensive work with established mental health institutions looking for brief treatments to enable faster patient recovery, especially for patients in an impasse state of mind.

Voon Yen Sing is an Assistant Director of Clinical Services at the Singapore Association for Mental Health (SAMH). In her work, she oversees three centres: (1) Insight Centre which provides counselling services, (2) YouthReach which supports youths in recovery with case management services and (3) Oasis Day Centre which supports persons in recovery in the community with daily rehabilitative activities on weekdays. With more than 20 years of experience in the mental health sector, she shares her experiences frequently through talks and conducts trainings at various organisations like institutes of higher learning, Social Service Institute and many others, training a range of audience from professionals to members of the public. She has been invited to present at local and overseas conferences.

 

Trained professionally as a counsellor and a social worker, Yen Sing holds a Masters in Applied Psychology (Counselling Psychology) from the National Institute of Education, is certified as a Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner by Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work and Psychology. Prior to joining SAMH, she worked as a training officer and practised as a social worker at the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS) for about four years. During her time there, she earned a Diploma in Special Education offered by the Nanyang Technological University.

Evonne Lek is a qualified Family Therapist and holds a Masters in Systemic Psychotherapy from the UK. She has worked as a family therapist at a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service in London, and as a family therapist at IMH in both the adult and children’s departments.

Evonne currently runs her own successful practice and conducts workshops on family therapy and parenting. She is also a trained educational psychologist and has spent many years teaching children with special needs. Evonne is passionate about mental health and has a combined 19 years experience working with children, couples and families with a range of disabilities and mental illnesses.

Dr Reena holds a doctorate in Human Development and Family Studies (Developmental Psychology) and a Masters in Counselling. She has 14 years of experience in lecturing, tutoring, curriculum planning, and development and teacher training. She currently lectures psychology undergraduates at the Singapore Institute of Management - Global Education (SIM-GE) and the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS).

In addition to her academic responsibilities, Dr Reena practices privately and works with children, adolescents and couples. She specialises in working with children and adolescents in areas of social and emotional development. She also provides support to parents with difficulties and concerns about raising their children.

Dr Reena Dabas

Dr Hanita works as a senior clinical psychologist in the Institute of Mental Health, Singapore, working with adults with common mental health problems in inpatient, outpatient and community settings. She is part of the Gender Care team, which provides affirmative care to gender diverse individuals. Her therapeutic approach is eclectic, and she practices using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), third-wave CBT models such as Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systemic Psychotherapy, Schema Therapy and Solution-Focused Therapy. 

​

Her research and therapeutic interests include gender identity, neuropsychological testing, culture, trauma, psychosis and depression. She is passionate about community outreach and education, reducing the stigma of mental health problems, early identification and treatment and increasing access of psychological therapies to her fellow Singaporeans.

Dr Hanita Assudani

Geraldine holds a Masters of Social Science in Professional Counselling (Msoc. Sc) and is Certified in Thanatology (CT) for her professional and educational achievements in the field of death, dying and bereavement. A passionate advocate for quality of life and quality of death, Geraldine has rich experience in community work and social change, serving as a Medical Social Worker and Counsellor for low-income families, sick elderly, terminally ill children and caregivers.

 

As a Counsellor and Honorary Mentor in Singapore’s biggest paediatric palliative home care team, she led the restructuring and development of standards of excellence in bereavement care for the caregivers and families of children and young adults who have died. She is currently a Senior Counsellor and Research Associate at Nanyang Technological University, and aims to abolish the taboo of death and encourage meaningful dialogue on life and death through her clinical work and research.

Silma is a Senior Forensic Psychologist at the Clinical and Forensic Psychology Service of the Ministry of Social and Family Development since 2009. She is currently working in the Family Systems Specialist Unit. She graduated from the University of Western Australia, and obtained her Masters in Forensic Psychology with the University of New South Wales.

​

Silma specializes in conducting clinical and risk assessments of youth and adult offenders. She has experience providing evidence-based treatment programs to violent and sexual offenders both in community and residential settings. Presently within the Family System Specialist Unit, Silma focuses on delivering Functional Family Therapy to youth offenders and their families, with the aim to reduce reoffending risk and improve family functioning.
