ORGANISERS' INFO

inPsych

inPsych was founded on 23rd June 2016. We are registered with Singapore’s Registry of Societies, UEN: T16SS0124D. The Psychology scene in Singapore is rapidly growing with each passing day; however, most students or prospective students fail to have a good grasp of what the study of Psychology truly entails. Prior to enrolment, individuals may be clear on the course admission requirements only to have misconceptions or misrepresentations to what the discipline holds. Those amidst their term of study may also only discover midway the challenges and limitations Psychology holds. It is also a common trend for Singapore institutions to have a limited or absent representation for certain fields of Psychology. The process of having insufficient knowledge, exposure, and understanding while pursuing Psychology can result in anxiety and confusion, given the uncertain graduation and navigation.

The Society seeks to promote and disseminate knowledge in Psychology and its applications within the Singapore context for the benefit of the individual and society. It strives to make resources available for emerging and interested students wishing to study Psychology to better aid informed decisions and promote psychological well-being to all.

Previous Projects

inPsych has supported the first Singapore UniPsych Symposium held on the 13th August 2016, co-organised by the Psychology Societies from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and National University of Singapore (NUS). This Symposium was the first for the Singapore Psychology scene and gathered employers, alumni, postgraduates and undergraduates to discover more about Psychology and opportunities in Singapore. It also provided the platform for networking between schools and potential employers. The Symposium was well received with a total of 300 participants, 50 speakers and 25 talks ranging from Clinical to Sports Psychology.

inPsych is the corporate front of this committee and will be providing guidance for the organising of UniPsych Symposium 2018.

James Cook University, Singapore (JCUS) Psychology Society

The James Cook University Singapore (JCUS) Psychology Society was founded by a group of dedicated and passionate individuals, with the mission of enhancing students’ university experience through fostering personal relationships with peers, professional networking, developing individuals professionally, and helping others in need.

Events organised by the society include Student Bonding, Mental Health Awareness Week, Fundraising Carnivals, and Academic Talks. The society is committed to providing psychology students a rich learning experience and strives to provide value-added academic content, whilst building cohesiveness across levels and inter-universities with various bonding events. For instance, the society organised a JCUSxNUS Connect event in the intention of building relationships with cousins from the National University of Singapore (NUS). JCUS Psychology Society has also collaborated with numerous external organisations and individuals to bring learning beyond the classroom, as well as to raise awareness on key mental issues within the school community.

In 2018, JCUS Psychology Society collaborated with Crisis Intervention experts to conduct academic workshops for psychology students - open to students outside of JCUS as well. For the past few years, members of the society have been actively involved in volunteer work at organisations such as the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), MY Mentoring with the Metropolitan Young Men's Christian Association (MYMCA), and Very Special Arts (VSA) Singapore. Additionally, it has hosted fundraising initiatives for Viriya Family Service Centre, the Bone Marrow Donor Programme (BMDP) Singapore, and SPD, among others.

In line with its mission, JCUS Psychology Society is honoured to co-host UniPsych Symposium 2018 to help expand the platform of resources and to build on last year’s success to promote a greater understanding of the psychology scene in Singapore.

Nanyang Technological University

(NTU) Psychology Society

NTU Psychology Society was first inaugurated in June 2008 under the auspices of the NTU Student Affairs Office. Over the past few years, the society has been dedicated to increasing the wealth of information available for students on future career prospects and opportunities. NTU Psychology Society holds frequent career talks by personnel from a diverse range of government agencies and private institutions which provide students with insightful knowledge and perspectives for their future career choices. Annual visits to the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), Singapore Changi Prison and St. Andrew’s Autism Centre (SAAC) also allow students to better apply knowledge learnt in the classroom to real-life situations.

In 2018, the society continued to initiate activities that served to inform and bond both current students and alumni. In one of its events, titled Ex-PSYCH-ment, NTU Psychology alumni working in the field of Psychology after graduation were invited back to the university, to share about their experiences and journey leading to their career paths. The sessions helped in connecting academic goals to career motivations and was able to guide students in their preparation for their future careers.

NTU Psychology Society will be co-hosting this event for people in Singapore to gain greater understanding and awareness in the field of Psychology.

National University of Singapore (NUS) Psychology Society

The National University of Singapore (NUS) Psychology Society was established in 2006 to cater to the welfare of Psychology students. The main objectives of the society are to promote and encourage the study of the social sciences with particular emphasis on the course of Psychology by means of forums, talks, dialogue sessions organised in cooperation with related societies. Suitable programmes to introduce students into Psychology are regularly run to promote the wellbeing of members generally by means of organising social and recreational activities to foster co-operation and goodwill. On top of that, the Society seeks to foster a greater awareness in mental health through dialogue sessions and volunteering opportunities.

NUS Psychology Society frequently organises events such as career talks with speakers from the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF), ICA Psychological Service Branch, Pathlight School and Eden School, Duke-NUS earlier this year. We also organise annual visits to IMH, St Andrew's Autism Centre (SAAC) and Singapore Changi Prison. In addition, the Society is open to collaborations, collaborating with IMH and Community Health Assessment Team (CHAT) in past projects, with National Kidney Foundation (NKF) in volunteering and psychological assessments, and many more.

Having collaborated with Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Psychology Society and James Cook University Singapore (JCUS) last year on UniPsych Symposium 2017, NUS Psychology Society hopes to once again set a stage for tertiary education institutes to come together to explore and realise opportunities in the Psychology scene in Singapore.

Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) Psychology Society

SIM Psychology Society was founded by a group of passionate Psychology students who seek to establish a platform for professional development and social outreach relating to Psychology. To help students gain more information about their prospects and better understand what a career in Psychology might entail, the society has been organizing career talks, postgraduate talks, workshops, and volunteer opportunities on a regular basis. For the past few years, members of the society have been actively involved in volunteer work at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), Fei Yue Family Service Centre, and Clarity Singapore. The society has also collaborated with various NGOs, such as the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS), in organizing fundraising events and awareness campaigns.

Additionally, SIM Psychology Society organizes monthly social events to help members foster long-lasting personal and professional relationships. The society also welcomes students from other majors in an effort to promote greater awareness and understanding of Psychology-related issues amongst the general public.

SIM Psychology Society is proud to be a co-host of UniPsych Symposium 2018 and hopes to uncover even more unexplored opportunities in Singapore’s Psychology scene.

Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) Psychology Society

PsyConnect is a student interest group for the psychology students of the Singapore University of Social Sciences. Our mission is to be a platform for seniors and alumni, to be a bridge between the students and academic faculty, and to provide the students of SUSS with a strong network of social support. We do so by organising get together events such as ‘Psych Night’, exam skills workshops, and by conducting outreach programs for our incoming and prospective students during our orientation events and open houses. We also ensure that our students are able to easily contact us through social media at any time, should they require assistance in any capacity, from study notes to administrative details.

We aim to ensure that our fellow students gain invaluable experience during their time at SUSS. Thrice per semester, we organise volunteering trips to IMH, where our students get the opportunity to interact with the patients in the wards. Just last semester, we brought 32 IMH patients out for a field trip at Punggol Waterway Park. Once a year, we also organise a prison tour, where students will be able to better understand the daily lives of both the inmates and the staff, while simultaneously furnishing them with internship opportunities. Every semester, we also organise career talks by industry professionals and alumni, some of whom are forensic psychologists, prison psychologists and clinical neuropsychologists.
